Console Table Behind a Sofa: Height, Length and Walkway Rules with Real Measurements

A sofa that floats in the middle of a room shows its back to the dining area or the entrance. A console table placed behind it covers that back, gives a surface for lamps and adds a visual boundary between two zones. Two measurements decide whether it works: the height of the sofa back and the length of the sofa.

Height rule

The console top should be level with the sofa back or up to 2 inches below it. A console taller than the sofa back looks like a counter. Lamps and vases on it also end up behind people's heads.

Length rule

The console should be between two thirds of the sofa length and the full length minus 12 inches. It must never stick out past the sofa arms.

The 45 to 47 inch consoles fall a little short of two thirds on these sofas. They still work when centred, with a floor lamp or a tall plant filling each side. Depth and walking space

Consoles are 15 to 16 inches deep. Behind the console you still need a 30 to 36 inch walkway. Add it up before ordering: sofa depth, plus 16 inches of console, plus 36 inches of passage. With a 35 inch deep sofa that is 87 inches, a little over 7 ft, from the front of the sofa to the next obstacle. Rooms under 12 ft deep rarely have that to spare. What to put on it

• Two matching lamps, one at each end. They light the seating from behind and remove the need for a floor lamp. Plan a floor socket under the sofa during electrical work, or use rechargeable lamps.
• Low objects in the middle. Nothing taller than 8 inches between the lamps, so the view across the room stays open.
• Nothing breakable on the sofa side if children climb the sofa back.

When the sofa backs onto the dining area

In a combined living and dining hall, the console behind the sofa doubles as a serving surface for the dining table. Keep 42 inches between the console and the nearest dining chair back. Match the metals
