Dining Chair Size Guide: Seat Height, Chairs per Side and Matching Chairs to a Marble Table

Seat height
The gap between the seat and the table top should be 11 to 13 inches. For a 31 inch table that means a seat height of 18 to 20 inches. Lower than 18 and the table edge comes up to the chest. Higher than 20 and thighs touch the underside of the top or the base frame. If you are buying chairs separately, measure the seat height, not the back height. Sellers often list only the overall height.
Chairs per side
Each diner needs 24 inches of table edge. Chairs are 19 to 22 inches wide, and the rest is elbow room.

Buying chairs with the table or separately

Matching chair to table

Allow 36 inches from the table edge to the wall or the next piece of furniture. A chair pulled out takes about 20 inches and a person passing behind needs the rest.
