Rotating Top (Lazy Susan) Marble Dining Tables: Who Needs One, Sizes and Prices

An Indian meal puts six to ten serving bowls on the table at once. On a round table of 4 ft or more, the bowls in the middle sit beyond comfortable reach. A rotating top solves that. The reach problem

A seated adult reaches about 24 inches forward without leaning. On a 48 inch round table the centre is exactly 24 inches from every edge. Anything past the centre, or near it on a larger table, is out of reach. Rectangular tables avoid this because they are only 36 inches wide, but everyone at the ends is then far from the dishes in the middle. A round rotating top gives every seat the same access.

Who should choose a rotating top

• Families of five or six who eat together daily. The more bowls on the table, the more the rotation is used.
• Homes with elderly parents. They do not have to lift or pass heavy serving dishes.
• Homes that host often. Guests serve themselves without asking.
• Square dining areas. A 4 ft round table needs a 10 x 10 ft area, with 3 ft of clearance all round.

Room size

Add 6 ft to the table diameter to get the room dimension: 3 ft on each side for a chair pulled out and a person walking behind it. A 4 ft table needs 10 ft. In a combined living and dining hall, the dining zone can borrow walking space from the living side. A PVD partition marks the boundary without taking floor area. Using it well

• Spread the weight. Place heavy vessels opposite each other so the top stays balanced as it turns.
• Put hot kadhais and pressure cookers on trivets. Ask the team for the load rating before placing very heavy cookware on the rotating top.
• Keep tall bottles and jugs near the centre. They tip when the edge of the top is turned quickly.
• Teach children to turn it slowly. Fingers and glasses at the edge are the usual casualties.
• Wipe under the rim weekly. Crumbs collect where the top meets the base.

Six chairs around a 48 inch top get about 25 inches each along the edge. Choose armless chairs 19 to 20 inches wide.
