Side Table Height Guide: Matching Your Sofa Arm, Armchair and Bed

Beside a sofa or armchair
The table top should be level with the sofa arm or up to 3 inches below it. Your hand then moves sideways and slightly down to put a cup on it. A table higher than the arm gets knocked by elbows. A table more than 4 inches lower makes you lean.
- Most sofa arms are 22 to 25 inches high. A 20 to 21 inch side table fits that range.
- For low loungers with arms around 20 inches, the table sits level, which is correct.
- For armless and curved sofas, measure the seat height and add 3 to 5 inches. A 17 inch seat takes a 20 to 22 inch table.
Keep 2 to 3 inches between the table and the sofa arm so the upholstery does not rub against the metal.
Beside a bed
A bedside table should be level with the top of the mattress or up to 2 inches above it. Measure from the floor to the mattress top.
- Low platform beds have a mattress top at 18 to 22 inches. A 20 to 21 inch side table works.
- Box beds with storage reach 24 to 28 inches. These side tables will sit too low. Choose the 21 inch two-drawer side table only if the mattress top is under 23 inches, or ask the team about a custom height.
Top size
A 16 inch top holds a lamp with a 6 inch base, a cup and a phone. That is its limit. If you want a lamp and a stack of books, choose a square 16 x 16 inch top, which has more usable area than a 16 inch round.

Metal legs or stainless steel legs

Where a side table goes
- At the end of a three seater. One table at the end nearest the reading lamp. Two tables only if the sofa is 84 inches or longer, such as the Imperial Heritage Lounger.
- Between two armchairs. One shared table. The two single seaters of a 3 + 1 + 1 teak set each take their own.
- In a corner with a lamp. A corner beside the TV unit or under a piece of metal wall art.
- Beside an accent chair in a bedroom, with a 3 x 5 ft carpet underneath.
- In place of a centre table in a very small living room. Two side tables or a set of nesting tables move aside when floor space is needed.
