32 inches deep or 24 inches deep
The lounger is 32 inches deep. You can sit back with your feet up or lie down for an afternoon nap. It is the sofa for a family room and for watching television.
The set is 24 inches deep with a 44 inch high back. It keeps you upright. Older family members get up from it easily, and guests sit on it formally. It is the sofa for a drawing room where visitors are received.
Many homes need both: the set in the drawing room and a lounger facing the TV unit in the family lounge.
Floor space
- Lounger. One wall of 8 ft. With an 18 inch gap to the centre table and a 30 inch walkway, the zone is about 8 x 7.5 ft. It fits a 10 x 10 ft room.
- 3 + 1 + 1 set. The three seater on one side and the two chairs facing each other form a U about 9.5 ft wide and 7 ft deep. Allow a 12 x 12 ft room so that people can walk behind the chairs.

Why teak
Teak carries natural oils that resist termites and moisture, which is why it has been the default for Indian furniture that is expected to last decades. It is heavy, holds screws and joints well, and can be re-polished when the finish dulls. Upholstery wears out long before a teak frame does, and the frame can be reupholstered.
Care
- Dust the exposed wood weekly with a dry cloth.
- Keep it out of direct afternoon sun, which bleaches polish and fabric.
- Re-polish every two to three years, sooner in coastal cities.
