Wall Mirror Size and Placement: What Size Above a Console, and What It Should Reflect

A mirror above furniture follows the same rule as wall art: about two thirds of the width below it. The full method is in metal wall art sizing.

Hanging height

  • Above a console. Bottom edge 6 to 8 inches above the marble top, with the mirror centre at 58 to 60 inches from the floor so adults see their face without bending.
  • On a bare wall. Centre at 57 to 60 inches, the same gallery height as art.
  • Full length. Leaning a tall mirror against the wall is fine in a bedroom, but fix the top to the wall with a safety bracket in any home with children.

What the mirror reflects

This decides whether the mirror improves the room or not. Stand where you usually sit or enter, and look at what would appear in it.

  • Good: a window, a balcony door, a papered feature wall, a light-filled part of the room, a chandelier. A mirror opposite a window roughly doubles the daylight in a dark passage.
  • Avoid: a bathroom door, a kitchen sink, a cluttered shoe rack, a blank wall two feet away. A mirror reflecting a blank wall adds nothing and makes the room read as smaller, not larger.

Many Indian families avoid a mirror that faces the main door directly. If that rules out the foyer wall, use metal wall art or a wall clock there instead. Shape by wall

  • Round. Softens a room full of rectangles. Good above a rectangular console and beside a geometric base such as The Zenith.
  • Rectangular, horizontal. Widens a narrow wall. Good above a long console or sideboard.
  • Rectangular, vertical. Raises a low ceiling. Good in passages and narrow foyers.
  • Clustered or multi-panel. Covers a wide wall for the price of a medium mirror, and reflects light from several angles.

Finish and fixing

Match the frame metal to the furniture bases in the room, the same as with clocks and art. Gold frames with gold PVD centre table and console bases, black with black.

  • Drill and plug every mirror. Adhesive hooks are not appropriate for glass on a putty-finished Indian wall.
  • Large mirrors need two fixing points and a check with a spirit level.
  • Keep mirrors off damp external walls. Moisture behind the backing damages the silvering over time. See which walls stay dry.
  • Clean with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Water running to the edges gets under the backing.
