Metal Wall Art Sizing: The Two-Thirds Rule, Hanging Height and Covering a Wide Wall

DecoraHub

Wall art fails for one reason more than any other: the piece is too small for the wall. A single 16 inch sculpture above a 7 ft sofa looks like a mistake. This guide gives the three measurements that decide the size, then matches them to real pieces in the DecoraHub metal wall art collection.

Rule 1: two thirds of the furniture below

Art above a sofa, a bed, a console table or a TV unit should span about two thirds of that furniture's width. The arrangement can be one piece or a group, measured edge to edge.

Furniture below Width Art should span
Imperial Heritage 3 seater 75 in 48 to 56 in
Imperial Heritage Lounger 84 in 54 to 63 in
Premium Taupe Curve 90.5 in 58 to 68 in
Marble console table 46 in 30 to 35 in
The Meridian TV unit 60 in Leave the TV wall to the screen

Rule 2: hang the centre at 57 to 60 inches

Gallery height puts the centre of the arrangement at eye level for a standing adult. Above furniture, the rule changes slightly: leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back or the console top and the bottom of the art. Two separate objects with a large gap between them stop reading as one arrangement.

Rule 3: leave a margin

Keep at least 6 inches of empty wall on each side of the arrangement, and more on a wide wall. Art that runs almost to the corners makes the wall feel crowded.

How to cover a wide wall

Most decorative metal pieces are small. Reaching 50 or 60 inches usually means a set rather than a single piece.

Which wall

  • Above the sofa. The main wall in most living rooms. Use the two-thirds rule against the sofa width.
  • Above the console in the foyer. Two thirds of 46 inches is 30 to 35 inches. Styling is in the entryway console guide.
  • The dining wall. Hang at 57 to 60 inches from the floor, since diners are seated and the table is below. Birds and leaf sets suit this wall.
  • Staircase walls. Follow the slope of the stairs with a set, keeping each piece the same distance above the nosing of the step below it.
  • Bedroom, above the headboard. Keep it light. Heavy metal pieces directly above a bed are a hazard.

Do not hang art on a patterned wall

Metal art needs a plain background. On a mural such as Jaipur Garden, the shapes disappear into the pattern. On a plain linen texture wallpaper or painted wall, gold and black pieces stand out. Costs for a textured neutral are in wallpaper price per sq ft, and which wall to paper is in wallpaper for drawing room.

Finish and fixing

  • Match the metal to the room. Gold art with a gold PVD centre table base, black art with black bases.
  • Drill into the wall rather than using adhesive hooks for anything heavier than a small bird. Indian putty-finished walls shed adhesive fixings, usually in the middle of the night.
  • Mark the layout on the floor first, or cut paper templates and tape them to the wall before drilling.
  • Fix a set from the centre outwards so that errors land at the ends where they show least.

Common questions

How big should wall art above a sofa be?

How high should wall art be hung?
Centre at 57 to 60 inches from the floor, and 6 to 10 inches above the furniture below.

How many pieces should a set have?
