How Much Wallpaper Do I Need? The Square Foot Calculation, and Why You Do Not Deduct Doors

The calculation
Wall width in feet x wall height in feet = square feet.
A wall 12 ft wide and 10 ft high is 120 sq ft. At ₹99 per sq ft on Standard paper that is ₹11,880. The full price table by paper type is in wallpaper price per sq ft in India.
Measuring, step by step
- Width. Measure corner to corner at floor level and again at ceiling level. Older flats in Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi are often out of square by an inch or two. Use the larger figure.
- Height. Measure from the top of the skirting to the ceiling. If there is a false ceiling or a cornice, measure to where the paper will actually stop.
- Round up to the next half foot. A wall of 11 ft 8 in is measured as 12 ft. Paper is trimmed at the edges during installation, and a short print cannot be extended.
- Multiply. Width times height.
- Photograph the wall straight on, with switchboards, AC units, windows and doors visible.

Doors and windows
Measure the full rectangle of the wall, including any door or window in it. Do not deduct their area.
The reason is that the paper is printed as one continuous design and then cut around the opening during installation. The material still has to exist across the full width of the wall. Deducting a 3 x 7 ft door leaves you 21 sq ft short, and a short print cannot be joined invisibly.
A window that takes up more than about a third of the wall is worth a conversation with the team before ordering. On a wall like that, the pattern is cut into narrow strips and the design is lost. Walls that are not simple rectangles
- Sloping ceiling or a loft wall. Measure the full rectangle up to the highest point.
- A wall broken by a partition or a column. Measure each flat section separately, then add them. Where a PVD partition meets the wall, the paper usually stops at the partition.
- Two walls of a corner. Measure each wall separately. A mural carried around a corner needs planning, so tell the team what you intend.
- Staircase walls. Measure the full rectangle from the lowest floor level to the ceiling and send photographs. These walls are rarely straightforward.
A whole room
Add the four walls together, again without deducting doors or windows. A 10 x 12 ft room with a 10 ft ceiling has two walls of 100 sq ft and two of 120 sq ft, which is 440 sq ft. On Standard paper that is ₹43,560, and on Luxury paper ₹87,560. This is why most buyers paper one wall and paint the other three. One papered wall in a higher paper grade costs less and looks more deliberate.
Before you finalise the number
- Measure twice, on different days. Most errors are a misread tape, not bad arithmetic.
- Check whether the skirting is being replaced. A taller new skirting changes the height.
- Check whether a false ceiling is planned. It lowers the height, sometimes by 6 to 9 inches.
- Decide whether the paper stops at a cornice or runs to the slab.
