Carpet Materials Explained: Polypropylene, Polyester, GSM and Pile Height in Indian Homes
DecoraHubCarpet marketing talks about wool and silk. Almost every carpet sold in India for normal family use is made from synthetic yarn, and that is usually the right choice here. This guide explains what DecoraHub carpets are actually made of, what the specification numbers mean, and how each material behaves in Indian homes.
What the range is made of
| Type | Material | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| Area rugs | 60% heatset polypropylene, 40% polyester | Machine made, medium pile |
| Wall to wall | Polypropylene, twisted heat-set frieze | Machine tufted, 13 to 15 mm pile |
| Carpet tiles | 100% polypropylene | Tufted level loop |
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is the main fibre across the range, and its properties suit Indian conditions well.
- It does not absorb water. The fibre itself takes on almost no moisture, so it does not hold monsoon damp the way wool does, and spills sit on the surface long enough to blot.
- It is solution dyed. The colour is added to the fibre while it is being made rather than printed on afterwards, so it does not wash or fade out easily.
- It resists stains. Most food and drink spills lift with water and mild detergent if you get to them quickly.
- It costs less than wool and does not attract moths or carpet beetles, which matter in warm, humid cities.
- Its weakness is heat. Keep it away from hot vessels, diyas and cigarette ash. A burn mark is permanent.
Heatset polypropylene is twisted and then heat treated so that the yarn holds its shape. This is what keeps a pile from matting flat under a centre table and along a walking path.
Why polyester is blended in
The area rugs are 40% polyester. Polyester takes deep, saturated colour well and feels softer to the hand, which is what gives the Persian Red Royale and Terra Angles designs their depth of colour. It is slightly less resilient than polypropylene under heavy traffic, which is why it is a blend rather than the whole fibre.
Reading the numbers
- GSM, grams per square metre, is the weight of yarn in the carpet. The Peri Plus Beige wall-to-wall carpet is 1700 GSM and the Feather Creamy Beige is 1450 GSM pile weight with 2300 GSM total. Higher GSM means more yarn packed in, which means a denser carpet that holds up longer.
- Pile height is how tall the yarn stands. The wall-to-wall carpets are 13 to 15 mm, which is a plush, sink-in feel. Area rugs are medium pile.
- Loop or cut pile. The carpet tiles use a level loop, where the yarn stays as closed loops. Loops are harder wearing and easier to clean, which is why they are used in offices. Cut pile is softer underfoot.
Pile height by room
- High traffic living rooms, entrances and offices: lower pile or level loop. It shows footprint tracks less and vacuums more easily.
- Bedrooms: the 13 to 15 mm plush wall-to-wall. Comfort matters more than wear.
- Under a dining table: the lowest pile you can find. Chair legs drag, and crumbs fall into deep pile.
- Homes with pets: loop pile can catch claws, so cut pile is often safer. Either way, keep the pile low.
- Homes with toddlers: plush pile softens falls, but shows spills. The dense Persian patterns hide marks best, as covered in Persian vs modern carpets.
Machine made and why it matters
The area rugs are machine made. Compared with hand-knotted carpets this means an exact repeat of the pattern, consistent pile height across the whole rug, no variation between two rugs of the same design, and a far lower price. A hand-knotted wool carpet is a different product at a different price, bought for the craft rather than for daily family use.
Looking after it
- Vacuum weekly, and twice a week along walking paths.
- Blot spills, never rub. Rubbing pushes liquid into the backing.
- Use water and mild detergent on a cloth for most marks. Avoid bleach and strong solvents.
- Rotate a rug every few months so that sun exposure and foot traffic even out.
- Dry a damp patch fully. Polypropylene does not hold water, but the backing and the floor underneath can.
- Keep a carpet off a floor that stays damp in the monsoon. See the wall-to-wall carpet guide.
Common questions
Is polypropylene carpet good quality?
For Indian family homes, yes. It resists moisture, stains and fading, and it does not attract moths. Its one weakness is heat.
Which carpet is best for a living room with children?
A medium-pile polypropylene and polyester rug in a dense pattern. It is easy to clean and hides marks between cleanings.
What does 1700 GSM mean?
Grams of yarn per square metre. More yarn means a denser carpet that resists flattening.
Do you sell wool or silk carpets?
The current range is synthetic. Ask through the contact page about anything not listed.
