Carpet Tiles vs Wall-to-Wall Carpet vs Rugs: Cost per Sq Ft and Where Each One Works

DecoraHub

DecoraHub sells carpet in three forms: fixed-size rugs, wall-to-wall carpet by the running foot, and carpet tiles by the box. They differ most in price per square foot and in what happens when one part gets damaged.

Price per sq ft

Type Sold as Price Per sq ft
Rugs 3 x 5, 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 6 x 9 ft ₹24,999 to ₹28,999 for 6 x 9 (54 sq ft) ₹463 to ₹537
Carpet tiles Box covering 64 sq ft ₹14,400 per box ₹225
Wall to wall Running foot of a 12 ft roll ₹1,800 to ₹2,400 per running foot ₹150 to ₹200

Rugs cost the most per square foot because the design, border and finished edges are part of the product. Wall-to-wall costs the least because it is plain broadloom cut from a roll.

Rugs

Good for: living rooms and drawing rooms where the floor is marble or vitrified tile and you want it to show. Rented homes, because a rug moves with you. Rooms that are wet-mopped, since the rug rolls up.

Limits: the largest size is 6 x 9 ft. That covers a seating group with front legs on. It will not go under a full dining set. Size rules are in the living room carpet size guide.

Designs: Persian patterns such as Persian Red Royale, Persian Royale Ivory and Vintage Persian. Modern patterns such as Terra Angles and Vista Geo. More in the designer carpet collection.

Wall-to-wall carpet

Good for: bedrooms, home theatres, studies and any room where you want the whole floor soft and quiet. Also the cheapest way to get a custom-size piece under a dining table.

Limits: it is fixed to the floor. A stain or burn in the middle means patching or replacing the whole piece. Rooms wider than 12 ft need a seam. It should not go on floors that stay damp.

Options: Peri Plus Beige and Silky Slate Grey at ₹150 per sq ft, Silky Plus Cherry Red at ₹155, Feather Creamy Beige at ₹200. Ordering maths is in the wall-to-wall carpet cost guide.

Carpet tiles

Good for: offices, clinics, retail floors, kids' play areas and rented commercial space. A damaged tile lifts out and a spare goes in. Tiles also lift for access to floor wiring, which fitted carpet does not allow.

Limits: the joints between tiles stay faintly visible. Tiles suit a working floor more than a formal drawing room.

Options: hexagon tiles in grey, yellow, red and green. Two colours can be mixed across one floor. Order one box more than the area needs and store it. Dye lots change, and matching tiles two years later is hard.

Pick by situation

  • Marble or Italian tile floor you paid for: a rug. Cover the seating zone and leave the rest bare.
  • Bedroom with a cold or dated floor: wall to wall.
  • Office of 500 sq ft or more: carpet tiles. Send the floor plan through the B2B enquiry form.
  • Rented flat: a rug, or tiles if the landlord allows.
  • Dining area: a cut piece of wall-to-wall carpet sized to the table plus 24 inches on each side.
  • Home with toddlers or pets: tiles in the play area, a low-pile rug in the living room.
  • Large hall with two seating groups: plain wall to wall across the floor, with a patterned rug under each centre table.
