How to work out your order

1. Measure the room length and width in feet at the widest points, including door recesses.
2. If one side is 12 ft or less, the roll covers it in a single piece. Lay the roll along the other side.
3. The running feet you order equals the length of that other side, rounded up to the next full foot.
4. Multiply running feet by the price per running foot.

Room totals

The 11 x 14 ft room uses 154 sq ft and is billed for 168. The extra 14 sq ft is a 1 ft strip trimmed off the side of the roll. Every room narrower than 12 ft has this offcut. Keep it for a doormat or a wardrobe floor.

Rooms wider than 12 ft

A room that is more than 12 ft on both sides needs a second strip and a seam. Seam position matters. It should run away from the door and away from the main window so that light does not fall across it. Cut pieces for dining and seating areas

Fixed-size rugs stop at 6 x 9 ft. A dining table needs more. Chairs need 24 inches of carpet past the table edge on every side, so a 6 x 3 ft dining table needs a 10 x 7 ft piece. Costs outside the carpet price

• Underlay. A foam or felt layer under the carpet adds softness and slows wear. Budget for it separately.
• Laying. Wall-to-wall carpet is fixed with gripper strips at the edges or with adhesive. Ask the team whether laying is available in your city.
• Door trimming. Carpet plus underlay raises the floor by 10 to 15 mm. Doors that sit low may need planing.
• Floor preparation. The floor has to be dry and level. Carpet laid over a damp ground floor slab will smell within a season.

Where wall to wall makes sense

Bedrooms, home theatres, studies, upper-floor living rooms and offices. It is a poor choice for kitchens, bathrooms, ground floors with seepage and homes where the floor is wet-mopped daily.
