PVD PARTITION GUIDE DECORAHUB

PVD and Metal Partition / Stainless Steel Room Divider Complete Buyer Guide

Decora Hub

Last updated: May 2026. Written by the DecoraHub manufacturing and design team, based on four years of fabricating, installing, and servicing PVD partitions in over 5,000 Indian homes, offices, and commercial spaces.

The Indian PVD partition market is a strange place. The same product: a stainless steel room divider with a PVD-coated metallic finish: is sold by some manufacturers for ₹8,000 and by others for ₹2,50,000. Both call it a "PVD partition." Both claim "premium quality." One will look perfect after ten years; the other will be flaking and rusting within eighteen months. They are not the same product.

This is the guide we wish more buyers: homeowners, architects, interior designers, builders had read before they specified the wrong product, before they accepted the wrong material grade, before they trusted a contractor who promised "PVD finish" but delivered something else. We manufacture these partitions. We have installed them in homes from Kolkata to Kochi, offices from Mumbai to Bangalore, and hotels and showrooms across India. We have seen what works.

By the end of this guide you will know exactly what to specify, how to evaluate a quote, and what a realistic budget actually buys you. If you want to skip ahead, our complete PVD partitions collection is there. Otherwise, here is the long version.

  13. Frequently asked questions

1. What is a PVD partition, technically?

A PVD partition is a room divider made from stainless steel that has been coated using Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) technology. The acronym sounds intimidating, so let us unpack it properly.

PVD is a vacuum-chamber process. Inside a sealed chamber, a target material (typically titanium nitride for gold, titanium aluminium nitride for rose gold, carbon-based compounds for black) is vaporised at extremely high temperatures. The resulting ions travel across the chamber and bond to the stainless steel substrate at a molecular level. The coating layer is just 0.5 to 5 microns thick: about 1/10th the thickness of a human hair: but extraordinarily durable.

Three things to understand about why this matters:

  1. It is bonded, not applied. Unlike paint or electroplating that sits on the surface, PVD becomes part of the metal itself. You cannot scratch it off the way you can scratch off plated gold.
  2. The thinness is the point. Because the coating is molecular-thin and uniformly bonded, the underlying steel retains all its strength, formability, and structural properties. No flexing or impact will crack a PVD layer the way it would crack a thicker electroplated or powder-coated layer.
  3. It is the same technology used in luxury watch cases (Rolex, Omega), premium door hardware, surgical instruments, and aerospace components. It was developed for environments where coating failure is unacceptable.

For Indian conditions specifically: high humidity, monsoon season, coastal salt air, dust, occasional cleaning chemicals: PVD is genuinely the gold-standard surface treatment. There is no realistic chance of fading, chipping, peeling, or tarnishing over the table's lifespan when done properly.

2. PVD vs powder coating vs electroplating vs paint

This is the comparison that determines whether your partition lasts 3 years or 20. Every Indian seller will call their coating "premium" or "durable" — the technical reality is in the specifics.

Coating How it bonds Lifespan Common failures Cost premium
PVD Molecular bond 20+ years None (under warranty) Highest
Powder coating Heat-cured polymer layer 5–8 years Chipping, fading, UV damage Mid
Electroplating Electrochemical surface layer 1–3 years Flaking, tarnishing, peeling Low
Spray paint Mechanical adhesion 6 months–2 years Almost everything Lowest

The hidden cost truth

Buyers often compare an electroplated partition at ₹12,000 to a PVD partition at ₹28,000 and assume they are paying double for "premium branding." This is the wrong way to think about it. The honest comparison is 10-year total cost of ownership:

  • Electroplated partition: ₹12,000 initial + ₹15,000 in re-coating after year 2 + ₹15,000 again after year 5 + replacement after year 8 = ₹50,000+ over 10 years
  • Powder-coated partition: ₹20,000 initial + ₹12,000 in touch-ups and re-coating around year 6 = ₹32,000 over 10 years
  • PVD partition: ₹28,000 initial + ₹2,000 in cleaning supplies over 10 years = ₹30,000 over 10 years

The PVD partition is genuinely cheaper over a decade. The upfront premium pays for itself even before you factor in the months of dealing with ugly flaking coatings, mismatched touch-ups, and contractor visits.

3. SS 304 vs SS 316 vs ordinary steel — what to specify

The coating sits on top of the steel. The grade of steel underneath determines what happens when the coating ever does get scratched, breached, or worn — and how the partition handles humidity, salt air, and time.

Grade Nickel content Indoor performance Coastal performance Cost
SS 304 8% Excellent Good Standard
SS 316 10–14% Excellent Superior +25–40%
SS 201 3–5% Adequate Poor (rusts) Cheapest
Mild steel + coating None Coating-dependent Fails Lowest

For 90% of Indian residential and commercial applications, SS 304 is the right specification — the same grade used in commercial kitchens, hospital surfaces, and food-processing equipment. It is what we use across our full collection.

For coastal locations (Mumbai sea-facing, Chennai, Goa, Kochi, Visakhapatnam) and pool-area or balcony installations exposed to direct rain, SS 316 is worth the 25–40% premium. The extra nickel content provides meaningfully better resistance to salt air corrosion. We offer SS 316 on request for these scenarios.

Anything sold as "stainless steel" at significantly cheaper-than-market prices is almost always SS 201 — adequate for indoor furniture in dry climates, but problematic anywhere with humidity. "Steel" or "metal partition" without a grade specification is usually mild steel with a coating that hides the underlying material — avoid for any partition you want to keep more than 5 years.

4. PVD vs glass vs wood vs traditional jali — choosing the right room divider

Step back from coating choices for a moment. The bigger question is whether a PVD partition is the right solution at all for your specific need.

PVD vs full glass partition

Glass partitions (frameless tempered glass, fluted glass, frosted glass) divide space while maintaining maximum light flow. They work brilliantly in modern minimalist interiors and small apartments where blocking light is unacceptable.

However, full glass partitions have limitations: they show every fingerprint and smudge, they require significantly more cleaning, they offer near-zero privacy in clear forms, and they can feel cold or clinical in residential settings. PVD partitions with integrated fluted glass — which we and most manufacturers offer — combine the best of both: metal framing for visual interest and durability, glass panels for light flow and partial transparency.

PVD vs wood partition

Wooden partitions (Sheesham, teak, MDF with veneer) are warmer in feel and pair well with traditional Indian interiors. The trade-offs are real, however: wood swells in monsoon humidity, attracts termites (a documented and expensive problem in Hyderabad, Lucknow, Ahmedabad), shows scratches and water damage, and looks dated in modern apartments.

PVD partitions are essentially maintenance-free across all these dimensions. For traditional or rustic interior styles, wood may still be the right answer aesthetically. For modern or contemporary interiors, PVD wins on every practical dimension.

PVD vs traditional jali (carved stone or wood lattice)

Traditional Indian jali partitions — carved sandstone, marble, or wooden lattice work — carry significant cultural and aesthetic weight, particularly in heritage homes and traditional interiors. They are also expensive (₹50,000–₹3,00,000+ for a quality jali), heavy (often requiring structural reinforcement), and difficult to clean.

PVD partitions with laser-cut patterns can replicate the visual rhythm of traditional jali at a fraction of the cost and weight, with zero maintenance. For homeowners who want the jali aesthetic without the impracticalities, a PVD partition with floral or geometric laser-cut patterns is the modern answer. Browse our laser-cut PVD partition designs to see the range available.

PVD vs curtain or drapery divider

Curtains are the cheapest soft divider option but offer no acoustic separation, accumulate dust, fade in sunlight, and require frequent cleaning. They make sense as a temporary or aesthetic solution, not as a serious room divider.

5. Design categories: geometric, floral, fluted glass, statement

PVD partition designs broadly fall into four categories, each suited to different interior styles and functional needs.

Geometric patterns

Repeating shapes: hexagons, capsules, zig-zags, circles, squares: laser-cut into the steel frame. The geometric language reads as "contemporary" and "minimalist" and pairs well with modern furniture, neutral palettes, and architect-designed homes. Our zig-zag, capsule, and cubical designs all fall in this category.

Best for: modern apartments, office spaces, restaurant zoning, minimalist living rooms.

Floral and organic patterns

Leaf motifs, lotus designs, tree-of-life patterns, vine work, abstract organic curves. These read as "warmer" and "softer" than geometric designs, and reference traditional Indian craft traditions while remaining contemporary in execution. Particularly popular for pooja room dividers and heritage-modern interiors.

Best for: traditional or transitional Indian homes, pooja room dividers, formal entryways.

Fluted glass with PVD frame

Vertical-ribbed glass panels held in a slim PVD-coated frame. The fluted glass provides partial transparency (you see shapes and light, not detail) while the metal frame adds visual rigour. This is currently the highest-demand design category in modern Indian interiors — clean, contemporary, photogenic. Our luxurious fluted glass partition is the bestseller in this category.

Best for: living-dining separation, bedroom dressing areas, modern apartments, hotel and restaurant zoning.

Statement and luxury pieces

Intricate 3D effects, large-scale installations, mixed-media combinations (PVD + marble + brass + glass), bespoke commissions. These are typically used in luxury residential foyers, hotel lobbies, and commercial installations where the partition is a designed centrepiece, not just a functional divider.

Best for: villa foyers, hotel lobbies, premium retail installations, statement commercial spaces.

6. Where to use PVD partitions in Indian homes and offices

Living-dining separation

The single most common use case in modern Indian apartments where open-plan living-dining is now standard. A PVD partition (typically 6–8 ft tall, 4–6 ft wide) defines the two zones without fully closing them off — light flows, conversation flows, but the spaces read as distinct. Fluted glass + metal frame designs work particularly well here.

Pooja room divider

Many Indian homes integrate a small pooja space within the living room or near the entrance. A PVD partition with traditional motifs (lotus, geometric mandalas, leaf patterns) in gold or bronze finish creates a defined sacred space without requiring a separate room. We have shipped hundreds of these to homes across India.

Bedroom dressing area

A partition can separate the bed from a dressing/vanity area, creating a hotel-suite feel in a single room. Rose gold or matte black PVD finishes work particularly well in bedroom contexts — softer and more intimate than gold.

Home office zone

Post-2020, dedicated home office space is a real requirement. A PVD partition can carve out a work zone from a living or bedroom area, providing visual separation and a sense of "entering work" without requiring a separate room. Designs with integrated shelving add functional storage.

Foyer or entrance partition

Many Indian apartments open directly into the living room without a foyer. A PVD partition placed 3–4 feet from the front door creates a small foyer area, prevents direct sightlines into the living room from the door, and provides a visual welcome moment. Traditional motifs work particularly well here.

Balcony privacy screen

For ground-floor or low-rise apartment balconies overlooked by neighbours, a PVD partition (typically 7–9 ft tall) provides privacy while maintaining airflow and visual interest. Use SS 316 grade for these installations due to weather exposure.

Commercial applications

Hotel lobbies (large-scale statement installations), restaurants (table zoning, host stand separation), offices (workstation dividers, meeting room boundaries), salons and spas (treatment area separation), retail showrooms (display partitions, dressing room walls). We serve all these commercial categories with B2B pricing and custom design support.

7. Sizing for Indian apartments and homes

Height

The rule of thumb: partition height should be roughly 70–80% of ceiling height. A standard Indian apartment with 10 ft ceilings (3.05 m) pairs with a 7–8 ft (2.1–2.4 m) partition. Lower than this and the partition reads as a "screen" rather than a "divider." Higher than this and it crowds the ceiling line and can require structural mounting.

Ceiling height Recommended partition height Typical application
9 ft (2.74 m) 6.5–7 ft Older apartments, smaller flats
10 ft (3.05 m) 7–8 ft Standard modern apartments
11 ft (3.35 m) 8–9 ft Premium apartments, duplexes
12+ ft (3.65+ m) 9–10+ ft Villas, hotel lobbies, commercial

Width

Partition width depends entirely on the opening you are dividing. Common configurations:

  • 3–4 ft wide: privacy screen, dressing area divider, partial separation
  • 5–6 ft wide: standard living-dining separation in 2–3 BHK apartments
  • 7–8 ft wide: full living-dining or foyer separation in larger apartments
  • 9+ ft wide: custom installations, hotel lobbies, commercial spaces — usually built as multiple panels joined

Our standard sizes ship in 14–20 days. Custom sizes (4 to 12 ft height, 2 to 8 ft per panel) take 14–28 days due to fabrication time. For installations wider than 8 ft, we build multi-panel configurations that connect seamlessly.

8. Customisation: what you can change, what you cannot

Easy customisations (no extra cost or 5–10% premium)

  • Size adjustments within standard ranges (4–10 ft height, 2–6 ft width per panel)
  • Finish colour — gold, rose gold, silver/chrome, matte black, bronze, champagne
  • Glass options — clear, fluted, frosted, coloured tinted glass
  • Mounting method — floor, wall, ceiling, or hybrid

Moderate customisations (10–25% premium)

  • Pattern modifications — adjust density, mirror designs, combine elements from different patterns
  • LED backlighting integration
  • Integrated planter boxes or shelving
  • SS 316 grade upgrade for coastal locations

Custom design commissions (project pricing)

  • Bespoke patterns — your design, our laser-cutting and PVD coating
  • Logo integration for commercial installations (minimum 5 panels)
  • Mixed-media designs — combining PVD with marble, brass, or other materials
  • Large-scale installations — hotel lobbies, multi-panel configurations

What we cannot change

  • Coating thickness beyond 5 microns (PVD process limitation)
  • Steel grades below SS 304 (we do not work below this grade)
  • Sizes below 4 ft height or above 12 ft height in a single panel

9. Installation: DIY vs professional, mounting methods

Floor-mounted installations

The most common method — partition stands on its own weighted base, no wall or ceiling attachment required. Best for: renters (no permanent modifications), flexible layouts where the partition may be moved later, and DIY installations.

Time required: 1–2 hours. Stable up to 8 ft height with adequate base weighting. DIY-friendly for partitions under 40 kg.

Wall-mounted installations

Partition fastened to a load-bearing wall. Best for: permanent installations, partitions taller than 8 ft, situations where floor space matters. Requires a structurally sound wall (RCC, brick, or concrete — not drywall).

Time required: 2–3 hours. Requires basic drilling and bracketing. Professional installation recommended for partitions over 60 kg.

Ceiling-suspended installations

Partition mounted to ceiling and floor for maximum stability and a dramatic floor-to-ceiling effect. Best for: hotel lobbies, large commercial installations, high-ceiling residential applications.

Time required: 3–4 hours. Requires structural ceiling assessment. Always professionally installed.

Hybrid multi-point installations

Combination of floor and wall mounting for very large or multi-panel installations. Used for installations wider than 8 ft or in commercial high-traffic areas where structural stability is critical.

DIY vs professional decision tree

DIY suitable: floor-mounted single panel, height under 7 ft, weight under 40 kg, concrete or tile floor. We provide assembly manuals and video tutorials.

Professional required: ceiling installations, wall-mounted on drywall, heights over 8 ft, multi-panel configurations, all commercial installations. We coordinate professional installation in metro cities — typically ₹2,500–₹5,000 depending on complexity.

10. Realistic 2026 pricing across every tier

Price range What you get Best for Lifespan
₹6,000–₹12,000 Mild steel + spray paint or electroplating. Marketed as "premium" but neither. Avoid 1–2 years
₹12,000–₹20,000 SS 201 + electroplating or basic powder coat. Decent for short term. Renters, temporary use 3–5 years
₹15,000–₹50,000 SS 304 + genuine PVD. Standard residential range. Customisable. Most homes (sweet spot) 20+ years
₹50,000–₹90,000 Premium designs, fluted glass integration, larger sizes, statement pieces. Premium homes, foyers 20+ years
₹90,000+ Custom commissions, multi-panel commercial installations, designer pieces. Commercial, villas, hotels 25+ years

Our full PVD partition range sits in the ₹15,000 to ₹90,000 bracket. Every partition uses SS 304 grade steel and genuine PVD coating with a 10-year coating warranty. We are direct manufacturers — no dealer markup, no showroom rent — which is how we offer this specification at a meaningful discount to traditional retail.

If a quote comes in significantly below ₹15,000 for a 6 ft × 4 ft PVD partition, ask specifically: "Is this SS 304 grade?" and "Is this genuine PVD coating or electroplating?" The honest answers will explain the price.

11. Care and maintenance

Weekly

Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. Five minutes maximum. That is the entire weekly maintenance.

Monthly

Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth and mild dish soap solution. Dry immediately with a clean cloth. Pay attention to the metal frame, glass panels (if any), and the base where it meets the floor.

Common issues and fixes

  • Fingerprints on glass and metal: baby wipes or diluted isopropyl alcohol (70%). For high-touch areas, nano-coating treatment is available (₹2,000 add-on).
  • Water spots: white vinegar + water 1:3 ratio, dry immediately.
  • Minor surface scratches: stainless steel polish for light marks; professional buffing for deeper ones (₹1,500–₹3,000).
  • Loose mounting: tighten screws quarterly as part of general home maintenance.

What to avoid

  • Bleach, chlorine, ammonia-based cleaners
  • Abrasive scrubbers or steel wool
  • Acetone or solvents
  • High-pressure water or steam cleaners
  • Acidic cleaners (vinegar diluted is fine; concentrated lemon or vinegar is not)

Coastal cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Goa, Kochi, Visakhapatnam)

Increase cleaning frequency to bi-weekly. The PVD coating handles salt air, but visible salt deposits accumulating on the surface can dull the finish over years if completely ignored. A monthly damp wipe handles this completely.

For coastal installations on balconies or terraces, we recommend SS 316 grade — the additional nickel content provides meaningfully better corrosion resistance in salt-air environments.

We have a separate detailed article on caring for PVD partitions if you want the longer version.

12. Nine mistakes Indian buyers make repeatedly

  1. Confusing PVD with electroplating. The terms are sometimes used interchangeably by dishonest sellers. PVD is a vacuum molecular bond; electroplating is a surface-level deposit. They are not the same and they do not perform the same.
  2. Not specifying steel grade. "Stainless steel" without SS 304 or SS 316 specification usually means SS 201, which rusts in humidity.
  3. Ignoring ceiling height in partition sizing. 70–80% of ceiling height is the rule. Going too tall or too short throws off the proportions of the whole room.
  4. Underestimating weight. A 7 ft × 4 ft PVD partition weighs 35–55 kg. Plan the delivery path — lift, staircase, door dimensions.
  5. Choosing the wrong mounting method. Floor-mounted in a high-traffic area without weighted base = wobble. Wall-mounted on drywall = failure. Match the mounting to the application.
  6. Buying for the showroom photo rather than the room. A partition that looks dramatic in a showroom with 14 ft ceilings will look cramped in a 10 ft apartment. Visualise it in your space first.
  7. Skipping the warranty conversation. Reputable manufacturers offer 10+ years on PVD coating. If a seller will not put it in writing, the coating is probably not genuine PVD.
  8. Forgetting about glass cleaning. Fluted glass panels are beautiful but show every fingerprint and water mark. Factor cleaning into your maintenance commitment.
  9. Trusting "70% off" sale pricing. Indian furniture retail runs on inflated MRPs. Cross-check D2C online prices for similar specifications to know what is reasonable. A "₹1,20,000 partition reduced to ₹35,000" usually never cost ₹1,20,000.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PVD and electroplating?

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) bonds the coating at a molecular level inside a vacuum chamber — it becomes part of the metal. Electroplating deposits a thin metal layer electrochemically on the surface. PVD lasts 20+ years; electroplating lasts 1–3 years before flaking, tarnishing, or peeling. PVD costs more upfront but is cheaper over a decade.

Will PVD coating fade or tarnish over time?

No. Genuine PVD coating using titanium nitride (gold), titanium aluminium nitride (rose gold), or carbon-based compounds (black) is colourfast for the partition's lifetime. The molecular bond does not oxidise, react with air, or degrade under UV exposure. Our coating warranty is 10 years; in practice, properly applied PVD lasts 20+ years.

Is SS 304 enough or do I need SS 316?

For 90% of Indian indoor residential and commercial applications, SS 304 is the correct specification. SS 316 is worth the 25–40% price premium only for: coastal locations within 5 km of the sea, balcony or terrace installations exposed to direct rain, pool-area installations, or any environment with regular salt air exposure.

Can PVD partitions go outdoors?

Covered balconies, semi-covered terraces, and protected outdoor areas — yes. Direct rain or unprotected outdoor exposure — only with SS 316 grade and an additional protective wax treatment annually. We do not recommend any partition for completely exposed outdoor installations.

How much does a PVD partition cost in India in 2026?

For genuine SS 304 + PVD specification: ₹15,000–₹50,000 for standard residential sizes, ₹50,000–₹90,000 for premium designs and larger installations, ₹90,000+ for custom commercial commissions. Anything significantly below ₹15,000 for a 6×4 ft partition is usually SS 201 or electroplated, not genuine PVD.

Can I install a PVD partition myself?

Floor-mounted partitions under 7 ft and 40 kg are DIY-friendly — we provide assembly manuals, video tutorials, and hardware. Ceiling-suspended, wall-mounted on drywall, heights over 8 ft, and all commercial installations should be professionally installed.

Do PVD partitions block sound?

Partially. Metal partitions reduce noise transmission by approximately 15–20%. Fluted-glass-integrated designs perform slightly better at 25–30% reduction. PVD partitions are not soundproof like solid walls — they are designed for visual and spatial separation, not acoustic isolation.

What sizes can be customised?

Heights from 4 ft to 12 ft per panel, widths from 2 ft to 8 ft per panel. For installations wider than 8 ft, we build multi-panel configurations. Custom sizes ship in 14–28 days vs 14–20 days for stock.

Are PVD partitions suitable for Indian Vastu requirements?

PVD partitions work well within Vastu principles — they can define zones without permanently blocking the natural energy flow that fully built walls would. For specific Vastu-compliant placements (defining the pooja area in the north-east, separating the entrance from direct sightlines, creating zones without disrupting prescribed directions), customisable PVD partitions provide flexibility that traditional construction does not.

What is the typical delivery time?

Standard stock partitions: 5–7 business days for metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad), 7–10 days for Tier 2 cities, 10–14 days for remote areas. Custom orders add 14–18 days for fabrication. Every partition ships in multi-layer protective packaging with insurance for orders above ₹1,00,000.

Do you offer B2B pricing for architects and interior designers?

Yes. We offer trade pricing (15–25% discount), 24-hour quotations, technical specifications and CAD files, refundable material samples, and dedicated B2B support. Builders, hotels, and commercial clients get additional volume pricing. Contact our B2B team at +91 62903 50924.
