Partitions for Home — Stainless Steel PVD Metal Partition for Indian Living Room by DecoraHub

Partitions for Home: The Complete Indian Buying Guide (Types, Materials & Room-by-Room Sizing)

DecoraHub

We have installed partitions in over 5,000 Indian homes. The question we get asked most often is not which design to choose — it is whether a partition will actually work in the specific room the customer has in mind. A foyer that is 3 feet wide. A living room that opens directly into the kitchen. A bedroom where the dressing area is technically a corner, not a room.

This guide answers that question for every standard Indian home layout. It covers the four types of partitions used in Indian homes today, the material that outlasts every other option in Indian conditions, room-by-room sizing rules, and what honest prices look like from a manufacturer who has seen the inside of 5,000 Indian rooms.

Why Partitions Work Differently in Indian Homes

The Western concept of a room partition assumes a dedicated entryway, a separate dining room, and a living room that does not double as a corridor. Indian apartments — particularly in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR, and Hyderabad — operate on fundamentally different floor plans.

The typical 2BHK has a main door that opens directly into the living room. The living room and dining area share one rectangular space of 200–280 square feet. There is no dedicated entryway. There is no mud room. There is often no corridor between the bedroom and the bathroom.

A partition in this context does not divide two existing rooms — it creates a zone within one room. A 2-panel fluted glass partition placed 4 feet inside the front door creates an entryway that did not previously exist. A 3-panel geometric screen at the edge of the dining area creates a visual separation from the living zone without restricting light or movement.

The Four Types of Partitions for Indian Homes

1. Stainless Steel Metal Partitions

The most popular partition type in Indian homes right now. A stainless steel partition uses a Grade 304 stainless steel frame finished with PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating in gold, black, rose gold, or champagne. The frame can hold fluted glass panels, be laser-cut into geometric or floral patterns, or remain as a solid decorative screen.

Why it dominates Indian interiors: SS304 stainless steel does not rust in Indian humidity — not in Mumbai’s coastal air, not in Kolkata’s monsoon season, not in Chennai’s year-round moisture. The PVD finish is rated 8–9 on the Mohs hardness scale and does not chip, peel, or tarnish. A well-installed SS304 PVD partition looks identical in year 12 as it does on delivery day.

What it costs: ₹14,999 for a standard 8ft × 2ft panel. A typical 2BHK installation with 2–3 panels costs ₹30,000–₹60,000. Browse our full range of metal partitions for home or our PVD partition collection.

Best for: Living room to foyer separation, living to dining zone creation, pooja room screens, home office separation.

Not ideal for: Acoustic privacy. A stainless steel partition with fluted glass provides visual separation but not sound separation.

2. Wooden Room Partitions and Screens

Wooden partitions — typically sheesham, teak, mango wood, or MDF with veneer — were the standard choice in Indian homes before stainless steel. Laser-cut wooden jali screens, carved wooden dividers, and slatted wood panels remain popular in homes that prefer a warmer, traditional aesthetic.

The honest limitation for Indian conditions: Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture and releases it as humidity changes. In Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, and Vizag, wooden partitions warp, crack, and develop mildew within 3–5 years if not treated regularly. Even indoors, the seasonal humidity swings in coastal Indian cities stress the joints and finish of wooden furniture.

What it costs: ₹8,000–₹25,000 for a standard wooden jali screen. Carved teak or sheesham partitions start at ₹35,000.

Best for: Homes with traditional or transitional interiors, dry inland cities, rooms that are air-conditioned year-round.

3. Glass Partitions

Frameless or semi-framed glass partitions — toughened glass panels 8–12mm thick mounted in floor tracks — are used primarily in home offices, study rooms, and master bedroom dressing areas where acoustic privacy is needed alongside light transmission.

Fluted glass (also called ribbed glass or reeded glass) is the variant that has become mainstream in Indian living room partitions. Unlike flat clear glass, fluted glass diffuses light while obscuring direct sightlines.

What it costs: Toughened glass with aluminium frame: ₹450–₹650 per sq ft installed. Fluted glass within a metal frame is incorporated into metal partition pricing from ₹14,999.

4. Fabric and Curtain Room Dividers

Ceiling-mounted curtain tracks, hanging fabric panels, and macramé room dividers are the least permanent and least expensive option. They work in rental apartments and temporary living arrangements where flexibility matters more than permanence.

What it costs: ₹2,000–₹8,000 for ceiling-mounted curtain track with panels.

Best for: Rental apartments (no floor drilling required), children’s play areas, temporary workspace separation.

Room-by-Room Sizing Guide for Indian Homes

Foyer to Living Room Partition

The most common partition use case in Indian apartments. The partition is placed 3–5 feet inside the main door, creating a visual screen between the entry point and the living area beyond.

Width to cover: Measure the full opening between the door and the first fixed obstacle. For most 2BHK and 3BHK apartments, this opening is 5–8 feet. Cover it with 2–3 panels of 2-foot width each.

Height: Standard 8ft panels work for 9–10 foot ceilings. Leave 12–18 inches of ceiling gap for a floating effect. For ceilings below 9 feet, use 7ft panels.

Style the foyer side with a marble console table — a 36–42 inch console placed against the partition on the entry side creates a styled vignette while the partition frames it from behind.

Living Room to Dining Room Partition

Open-plan living-dining layouts need a partition that suggests boundary without enforcing closure. Position the partition at the edge of the dining table’s footprint, not at the midpoint of the room.

Width: Typically 4–6 feet for a standard 3BHK living-dining separation. 3 panels of 2-foot width is the most common configuration.

Pair with a marble dining table in the same PVD finish family for a coherent look across both zones.

Bedroom to Dressing Area Partition

Typically 1–2 panels covering a 2–4 foot opening between the sleeping zone and a wardrobe alcove or dressing table corner. 6–7 feet height is sufficient — a partition that reaches the ceiling in a bedroom feels confining.

Design recommendation: Capsule shape or minimalist bar design. Geometric laser-cut designs are visually active and distract in a space meant for rest.

Home Office Separation

Match the partition width to the desk and storage footprint, not the room width. 5–6 feet height is ideal for a seated work setup — it provides complete visual privacy when seated and a view over the partition when standing.

Pooja Room or Mandir Screen

A laser-cut floral or geometric partition placed in front of a temple niche or mandir corner creates a sacred boundary while allowing incense smoke and light to pass through the metalwork. Gold and champagne PVD are the most popular finishes for religious spaces.

Three Rules for a Good Partition Installation

Rule 1: The partition should suggest boundary, not enforce closure. If a partition blocks natural light, interrupts the ceiling fan’s airflow, or forces people to walk a longer route through the apartment, it is in the wrong place.

Rule 2: Height should be proportional to ceiling height. In a 9-foot ceiling room, an 8-foot partition looks correct. In a 12-foot ceiling room, an 8-foot partition looks like it was put in the wrong house. Match your panel height to 80–90% of your ceiling height.

Rule 3: The partition finish should already exist somewhere else in the room. If your marble centre table has a gold PVD base, a gold PVD partition belongs in the same room. If everything else is matte black or chrome, a black PVD finish reads more naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of partition is best for an Indian living room?
For most Indian living rooms, a 2–3 panel SS304 stainless steel partition with fluted glass is the most practical choice. It separates zones visually while keeping light flowing, takes only 4 inches of floor depth, installs without wall damage, and requires zero maintenance beyond a monthly wipe.
How much does a partition for home cost in India?
A single SS304 PVD partition panel starts at ₹14,999. A complete 2BHK installation with 2–3 panels typically costs ₹30,000–₹60,000 including customisation and pan-India delivery. Browse all designs and prices here.
Can a partition be installed without drilling walls?
Yes. Floor-mounted installation uses anchor plates bolted to the floor tile — no wall drilling required. This is the standard installation method for all DecoraHub partitions and is reversible when you move or renovate.
What is the difference between a partition and a room divider?
The terms are used interchangeably. Both refer to a freestanding or anchored panel that separates zones within a room. “Partition” is more commonly used for permanent or semi-permanent floor-anchored installations. “Room divider” often refers to lighter, movable options.
Can partitions be customised for non-standard ceiling heights?
Yes. Standard panels are 8 feet tall. We fabricate custom heights from 6 feet to 12 feet. Share your room dimensions and we will recommend the exact panel configuration.
How long does a stainless steel partition last?
A Grade 304 stainless steel partition with PVD coating lasts 15–20 years under normal indoor use in Indian conditions. The stainless steel frame does not rust. The PVD finish does not peel, chip, or tarnish. Maintenance is a monthly wipe with a damp microfibre cloth.
Which partition design is best for Vastu?
Metal partitions in gold or champagne PVD finishes align with Vastu recommendations for metallic elements in the north or east directions. Fluted glass partitions allow energy and light to flow through the space — considered more Vastu-compatible than solid opaque partitions in the main living area.
