Fluted Glass Partitions: How Much Privacy You Get, Panels Needed and What It Costs

Fluted glass is ribbed vertically, so light passes through while shapes behind it blur. How much you can see through it

Fluted glass distorts rather than blocks. At 3 ft you see a clear human outline and colours, but not a face or a screen. At 6 ft you see movement and shape only. It is the right level of screening between a foyer and a living room, or between living and dining. It is not enough where full privacy is needed, such as a bedroom or a changing area, and it does not block sound at all.

How many panels to order

Panels are priced individually, so the total depends on the width you want to screen. Divide the opening width by the panel width.

A partition does not have to fill the whole opening. A three or four panel screen beside the entrance, with open floor beyond it, defines the foyer at a third of the cost. Send your opening width through the contact page and ask for a panel count before ordering.

Where it works

• Screening a staircase or a kitchen entrance in an open-plan home.
• Beside a pooja space, where light should still reach the area.

Where it does not

• Where you need full privacy or any sound reduction.
• In homes with toddlers, unless the panels are fixed floor to ceiling and checked for stability.
• In a narrow passage where a person would brush past the glass daily.
• Directly in front of a window that is the room's only daylight source. Even fluted glass takes some light.

Measuring before you order

1. Measure the floor-to-ceiling height. Panels are 7 or 8 ft, so check the height against a false ceiling if you have one.
2. Measure the opening width at floor level and again at the top. Older flats often differ by an inch or more.
3. Decide how the partition is fixed: floor to ceiling, floor mounted, or between two walls. Confirm the method with the team before ordering.
4. Check what the panels will stand on. A marble or tile floor takes a floor fixing. A wooden floor may need a different approach.
5. Check that doors, drawers and the main door itself still open fully once the partition is in place.

Matching the room

Keep the PVD finish the same as the furniture bases. Gold partitions with gold centre table and dining table bases, black with black. Cleaning

Dust settles in the grooves of fluted glass. Wipe vertically along the ribs with a microfibre cloth, weekly in a foyer. Clean the PVD frame with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners and scouring pads, which mark the coating.
