The Truth About PVD and Stainless Steel Partitions and Room Dividers 2026
Decora HubReading time: 12 minutes | 3,200 words
We started making PVD partitions in 2018 when a Bangalore architect rejected our powder-coated samples. "Come back when you can do real PVD," he said.
We spent six months learning the coating process. Broke three vacuum chambers. Lost ₹12 lakhs before getting it right.
Now we run two PVD coating lines in Kolkata and have tracked 5,000 installations. This is what happened.
What PVD Actually Is
Physical Vapor Deposition. The process is simpler than the name.
You put stainless steel in a vacuum chamber. Remove all air down to 10^-6 torr—emptier than space at 100km altitude. Heat titanium, chromium, or zirconium until it vaporizes. The metal atoms travel through vacuum and bond to the steel surface. One atom at a time.
The coating is 2-3 microns thick. Thinner than a human hair but molecularly locked to the base metal. You can't peel it because there's no boundary layer.
What PVD is NOT
- Not spray painting
- Not powder coating
- Not electroplating
- Not a finish sitting on top of steel
We tested 23 competitor samples in 2024. Eighteen were powder coating sold as PVD. Three were spray paint. Two were actual PVD.
The Powder Coating Problem
Powder coating works for three to five years in Indian conditions. Then tiny bubbles appear where moisture gets under the coating. The bubbles crack. The coating peels in sheets.
We've replaced 847 powder-coated partitions from other manufacturers. The failure pattern is always the same: starts at the bottom from floor moisture, spreads upward.
Delhi NCR is worst because of humidity swings. Coastal cities close behind.
We stopped offering powder coating in 2020 after tracking warranty claims. Sixty-three percent of powder-coated partitions needed repair or replacement within four years.
PVD-coated partitions? Eleven warranty claims in six years. All were installation issues. Zero coating delamination.
SS304 vs SS316: The Real Difference
Everyone asks which steel is better. Wrong question. Right question: where are you installing it?
SS304 (18/8 stainless steel)
- 18% chromium, 8% nickel
- Good corrosion resistance in normal environments
- ₹420-480 per kg (March 2026)
- What we use for 94% of our partitions
SS316 (18/10/2 stainless steel)
- 18% chromium, 10% nickel, 2% molybdenum
- Molybdenum gives marine-grade corrosion resistance
- ₹680-740 per kg
- For coastal installations and pool areas
If you're installing in Mumbai within 5km of sea, use SS316. Anywhere else inland Bangalore, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata SS304 is fine. The extra ₹15,000-20,000 for SS316 won't get you anything in a normal indoor environment.
We learned this by tracking installations. Partitions in Worli (Mumbai, 2km from sea): SS304 showed surface rust after 18 months. Same design in Powai (15km inland): no issues after four years.
The Thickness Lie
"2mm thick stainless steel!" the listing says. Usually it's 1.2mm. Sometimes 0.8mm.
We measure every incoming steel sheet with a micrometer. What suppliers actually ship when they promise 2mm:
- Claimed 2.0mm → Actual 1.5-1.8mm (common)
- Claimed 1.5mm → Actual 1.2mm (very common)
- Claimed 1.0mm → Actual 0.8mm (cheaper imports)
Thickness matters for two reasons:
- Rigidity: Below 1.2mm, partitions flex when you touch them. Looks cheap.
- Coating adhesion: Thin steel warps during PVD coating. Chamber temperature hits 450°C. Warped panels create uneven coating thickness.
Our standard: 1.5mm verified thickness for frames, 1.2mm for decorative panels. We add 10% to material costs by using actual claimed thickness. Lost some price-comparison sales. Gained zero warranty claims for structural issues.
What PVD Coating Costs
Our costs for a standard 8x4ft partition:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| SS304 sheet (1.5mm, 32 sq ft) | ₹8,400 |
| Tempered glass (if fluted design) | ₹4,200 |
| Hardware (mounting brackets, fasteners) | ₹1,200 |
| Laser cutting | ₹2,800 |
| Welding and finishing | ₹3,200 |
| PVD coating | ₹6,800 |
| Quality control and packaging | ₹1,400 |
| Total manufacturing cost | ₹28,000 |
We sell that partition for ₹35,000-38,000 depending on design complexity.
When someone offers an "8x4ft PVD partition" for ₹18,000, the math doesn't work. They're using thinner steel, skipping actual PVD coating, or cutting corners on welding.
Installation Failures We've Seen
Wrong wall anchors
Mumbai contractor installed an 8x4ft partition using plastic anchors meant for picture frames. Partition fell off the wall at 3 AM. Nobody hurt, but the family never trusted metal partitions again.
We now ship installation kits with correct anchors. Steel expansion anchors for concrete, toggle bolts for drywall, wood screws for studs. Added ₹400 to our cost. Eliminated installation failures.
Ignoring expansion
Steel expands with temperature. Not much—0.000012 meters per meter per degree Celsius. But across an 8ft partition in Delhi summer, that's enough to buckle if mounted tight at both ends.
Solution: one fixed point, one sliding bracket. The partition can expand without warping. We learned this after replacing three buckled partitions in 2019.
Floor moisture
First-floor apartments in Mumbai, ground-floor anywhere it rains. Moisture comes up through the floor, hits the partition base.
Fix: raise the partition 0.5 inches off the floor. Small aluminum spacers, costs ₹200. Moisture can't wick up. Started doing this as standard in 2021.
The Color Question
Our sales by finish (2025):
- Gold: 62%
- Rose Gold: 23%
- Black: 11%
- Silver/Champagne: 4%
Rose gold gets significantly more positive feedback six months after installation. People report less "visual fatigue." Gold is bold initially but some buyers say it's "too much" over time.
All finishes are equally durable. But if you're uncertain, we now suggest rose gold.
Black coating is harder to do right. Any tiny contamination shows as a light spot. We have 8% higher rejection rate on black finishes. Black costs ₹2,000 more than gold for the same partition.
Size Limits
Maximum practical size for a single panel: 10ft height, 5ft width.
Beyond that, you need segments. Not because we can't cut larger panels—we can. But because:
- Shipping: Getting a 12ft panel through a standard door is geometrically impossible
- Installation: Two people can't safely handle a partition over 50kg
- Flexibility: Large panels crack from building movement
The 8x4ft size fits through doors, up staircases, into elevators. Two installers can handle it. It's the largest practical single-panel partition for Indian construction.
We've made custom 12x8ft partitions. Required on-site assembly, special shipping, four installers. Cost 3x the standard price. Looked amazing. Would we recommend it? Only if you never plan to move.
What Destroys PVD Coating
Will NOT damage PVD
- Soap and water
- Mild acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon)
- Impact from normal use
- UV exposure (won't fade)
- Humidity
WILL damage PVD
- Hydrofluoric acid (HF) - dissolves the coating
- Abrasive cleaning (steel wool, scouring pads) - scratches it
- Welding spatter - burns into the coating
- Sustained temperatures above 500°C - alters the bond
In six years, two coating failures from customer damage:
- Construction worker used angle grinder near partition, metal sparks embedded in coating
- Home chef spilled industrial degreaser (with HF) on partition, caused pitting
Both times, we re-coated the affected panel. Cost ₹4,500 per panel.
The Fake PVD Test
Don't have a lab? Here's how to check if it's real PVD:
Test 1: Hardness
Try scratching with a coin. Real PVD won't scratch. Powder coating will show marks.
Test 2: Heat
Hold a lighter flame near (not touching) the coating for 5 seconds. Move away. If you see discoloration or bubbles, it's powder coating. PVD won't react.
Test 3: Solvent
Dab acetone (nail polish remover) on a small area. Wait 30 seconds, wipe off. Powder coating will show slight softening or color transfer. PVD won't react.
Test 4: Flexibility
Bend the panel slightly. If the coating cracks or shows stress marks, it's powder coating. PVD is bonded at molecular level—it bends with the steel.
We test every batch from our coating facility. Takes 10 minutes. Has caught three batches with coating issues before they shipped.
Design Patterns That Work
Fluted glass partitions (41% of our sales)
Vertical ridges in glass provide privacy while transmitting light. Works well for separating living room from dining, creating home office space, hotel room dividers.
Glass must be tempered. Regular glass cracks from thermal stress. We learned this when five panels cracked in Delhi summer 2019. All regular glass. Switched to tempered only.
Geometric lattice (28% of sales)
Laser-cut patterns in stainless steel. No glass, full visibility, pure decorative.
Problem: dust accumulates in intricate patterns. Needs weekly cleaning. We warn customers. Some buy anyway for architectural statements. Some choose simpler patterns.
Capsule/circular cutouts (19% of sales)
Circles and ovals cut in stainless steel panels. Retro-modern aesthetic.
These need more structural support than lattice patterns—circles remove more material. We use thicker frame rails. Most competitors don't. Their partitions sag over time.
Solid panels with minimal cutouts (12% of sales)
For maximum privacy. Hotels, executive offices, medical facilities.
We add sound-dampening backing on request. Reduces sound transmission by 15-18 decibels. Costs ₹3,500 extra for an 8x4ft panel.
The Warranty Truth
We offer 10 years on coating and frame, 5 years on glass.
What's covered
- Coating delamination (peeling, bubbling)
- Rust formation on stainless steel
- Structural welding failures
- Glass cracking from manufacturing defect
What's NOT covered
- Scratches from user damage
- Chemical damage (spills, harsh cleaners)
- Modifications after installation
- Normal wear and tear
In six years, 23 warranty claims:
- 11 installation issues (our fault, fixed free)
- 7 glass cracks (manufacturing defects, replaced free)
- 3 welding failures (design flaw in early batches, replaced free)
- 2 coating damage from customer modifications (rejected)
Warranty reserve costs us ₹2,400 per partition. Based on actual claims, we should charge ₹1,100. But one bad batch could spike that. We keep the reserve high.
Maintenance
Daily/Weekly
Microfiber cloth, dry wipe. That's it for 90% of the time.
Monthly
Mild soap solution (pH 6-8), soft sponge, rinse with clean water, dry with cloth. Five minutes per partition.
Don't use
- Window cleaner (ammonia dulls PVD over time)
- All-purpose kitchen cleaner (too harsh)
- Paper towels (micro-scratching from wood fibers)
What destroys partitions fastest: leaving water spots to dry naturally. Minerals in hard water etch into coating after repeated exposure. Wipe water immediately. This one habit adds 5+ years to partition life.
Cost Comparison: 5-Year Ownership
| Item | PVD Partition | Powder-Coated Partition |
|---|---|---|
| Initial cost | ₹35,000 | ₹22,000 |
| Maintenance (5 years) | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Repairs/Recoating | ₹0 | ₹15,500 (recoating year 4, chipping repairs) |
| Resale value | -₹20,000 | -₹5,000 |
| Total cost of ownership | ₹15,000 | ₹32,500 |
The cheaper option costs more. Every time we run these numbers for customers, they choose PVD.
What We Got Wrong
2019: Used 1.0mm steel to cut costs
Saved ₹2,800 per partition. Had 17 partitions develop visible flex within 8 months. Replaced all at full cost—₹5.9 lakhs loss. Never again used less than 1.2mm.
2020: Didn't raise partitions off floor
Mumbai monsoon, ground floor installations, four partitions developed base corrosion despite PVD coating. Moisture wicking up from floor, pooling at base. Now all partitions get 0.5-inch floor clearance as standard.
2021: Used cheaper mounting brackets
Saved ₹400 per partition. Three partitions detached from walls. No injuries, thankfully. Switched to thicker brackets rated for 2x partition weight. Added ₹650 to cost. Sleep better.
2023: Didn't test new glass supplier
They offered tempered glass at 15% below regular supplier. We ordered 200 panels. Thirty-four cracked during normal handling—they'd cut corners on tempering. Lost ₹1.4 lakhs. Now we qualify new suppliers with 50-unit trial orders first.
Installation Data
From 5,000+ installations, average time by partition size:
- 6x3ft: 45 minutes (one person)
- 8x4ft: 1.5 hours (two people)
- 10x5ft: 2.5 hours (two people)
- Custom 12x6ft: 4 hours (three people)
Common installation issues and frequency
- Wrong wall type identified (18%)
- Insufficient anchor points (12%)
- Floor not level, shimming required (31%)
- Ceiling obstruction not disclosed (7%)
- Electrical/plumbing in wall, drilling restricted (9%)
We now send pre-installation checklists. Customer fills it out, we flag potential issues before shipping. Reduced installation failures by 64%.

Who Should NOT Buy PVD Partitions
1. If you're renting short-term
PVD partitions are permanent installations. Drilling into walls, making holes. If you're moving in 1-2 years, use freestanding screens instead.
2. If you need acoustic isolation
Partitions reduce sound but not dramatically. For serious soundproofing (music studio, noisy neighbor), you need double-wall construction with insulation. Partitions won't do it.
3. If you change design frequently
PVD partitions are an 8-10 year decision. If you redecorate every 2 years, this is too permanent. The coating won't fade, the design won't change.
4. If budget is primary concern
If ₹35,000 for a partition is a stretch, wait. Don't compromise on thickness or coating quality to hit a price point. Save up, buy once, buy right. The cheap partition costs more in the long run.
The Bottom Line
After six years and 5,000 installations:
- Real PVD coating costs ₹6,000-8,000 per partition to apply. If total price is ₹18,000, it's not PVD.
- Steel thickness is more important than steel grade for 90% of installations. Get 1.5mm SS304 before considering 1.0mm SS316.
- Installation determines longevity as much as materials. Use proper anchors, allow for expansion, keep it off the floor.
- Gold looks bold, rose gold ages better, black shows every dust particle.
- The coating won't fail. The installation might. The design might not suit you long-term. But the coating? That's permanent.
We've replaced 847 competitor partitions that failed. We've had 11 warranty claims on our own. The difference is real PVD coating on proper steel, installed correctly.
